Mina Fina works at the crossroads between contemporary art, graphic design and audio-visual culture. Working across these separate fields, the artist is a member of three collectives: Grupa Ee, YGT (Your Gay Thoughts) and the Riso Paradiso art collective.
Mina started exploring the world of graphic design very early on. While still at school, she realised traditional design did not satisfy her artistically, so she started her own projects to combine drawing, painting, graphics and music. She began by tracing images of women from porn magazines, capturing them with unexpected tenderness and sharp elegance. By combining soft lines, layering and contrasts, she removes their intimate details and breaks a narrative which reduces women to objects of desire. Harshly-painted faces and flat bodies are placed in vague environments, hinting at the unchanging position of women, irrespective of time and distance travelled.
Mina’s works are intimate poetic confessions, combining sketches and text from diary entries inspired by literature, music and femininity. The artist’s notes provide character and emotional clarity to playful works, giving new context to word and image. This is often accompanied by writing on the wall: a very personal approach which speaks directly to our desires, aspirations and vulnerabilities.
Mina embraces mistakes and her “go-with-the-flow” philosophy is visible in sketches of figures and scenes from nature which are deeply narrative. The results indulge our dreams and sharpen our critical thinking. Through these raw, unrefined drawings, the artist explores elusive love, exhausted grief, frivolous solitude, and at times, lingering melancholy.
