nina čelhar

Nina Čelhar sees architecture as an extension of human nature. Buildings stand as a direct result of our ambition, creativity and production; and yet they contain us and define the way we live. She has spent years exploring the idea of living spaces, acting as both observer and recorder. Through a painterly representation of concrete exteriors and minimalist interiors on canvas, she scrutinises homes and belongings with quiet acceptance.
The work is calm and balanced, with muted tones and a noticeable absence of people. We are left to question: who lives in these spaces? The inhabitants might be missing, but their presence is clear. Nina says that people seek in their homes whatever they lack in everyday life. A potted plant stretches elegant green leaves, reflecting our own desire for shelter and belonging.
The artist presents “home” as a safe and deliberate grounding. And yet, views into her residential spaces often do not include a floor. These perspectives hang in the air, giving us space to reflect. Nina offers us an objective view into somebody’s private sphere (without the fear of being caught looking). Through our homes, she explores our values, goals and hidden desires.
