Tina Konec has spent a number of years creating monochromatic drawings of treetop views. She applies a pencil or ink wash technique onto black or white paper canvases, creating nuances of black and silver strokes. Treetops or twigs branching out from stems often escape the format, and yet, together with image layering and shaded elements, they invite a game of associations: will we see a palm print, a view from space, lichen on an aging wall, a crumpled cloud? The compositions hold an infinite order and balance, while seeming almost tangible.
When strolling around in nature, the artist photographs things that will later serve as inspiration for her work. She does not attempt to mirror reality by tracing the photographs onto her drawings. Instead, she interprets the environment and innovates using traditional techniques to create pieces where nature is depicted in its very own, convincing way.
She has made drawing a part of her routine – it helps her to feel free and de-stress. She does not allow outside influences to seep into her work. Her desire is to be herself, and not to parrot others. At its very core, drawing preserves the artist’s appreciation and respect for nature, a sensibility which she captures on paper.
Tina’s work points to the universal fragility of life. The artist, with a meditative process, portrays a self-sufficient, untamed nature, the diminishment of which will be caused (and grieved) by mankind. Nature and art do not simply represent a place for a privileged withdrawal or a respite from reality, but also a gathering place for new ideas, values, reflections and hope.
